D.A.N.C.E art club were invited to participate in Puehu: Cultural Dust, a group exhibition at The Suter Gallery in Nelson curated by Anna-Marie White. Our project D.A.N.C.E art club & The Taylors presented a series of events as part of Nelson Arts Festival. We traveled to Nelson along with artist collaborators, Dane Taylor and Imogen Taylor and pepe, Manamea Ela Lepo Taylor.
‘Our Mum’s’ is a 20 minute documentary made in response to an invitation to participate in Puehu: Cultural Dust at The Suter Gallery in Nelson. We decided to make use of the cinema space this gallery boasts. As much of our work is community centred we were conscious of being newcomers to the city of Nelson so the idea of making a film about our relationships to our mums came about as it was something everyone can relate to. The resulting documentary follows four different relationships and film styles using interviews, archival footage and long distance video calls.around long distance relationships, suburban histories and the transitions of cultural traditions as they are passed down through the generations. Our Mum’s reveals an intimate lens into the lives of our beautiful mothers.
Audience members were gifted hand made ula lole(lolly necklaces) and bags of popcorn.
Puehu: Cultural Dust:
A new generation of Polynesian artists are using video and performance art to express their cultural identity in real terms. Puehu: Cultural Dust (24 August – 20 October) is a group exhibition at The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū, Nelson, that explores this movement and describes a vision of contemporary Polynesian culture that complicates mainstream stereotypes. This tension is indicated by the title, Puehu, a reference to the whakatauki (saying) “tutu ana te puehu,” which describes an orator kicking up dust on the marae and metaphorically refers to provocative debate.
Artists: Rangituhia Hollis, Jeremy Leatinu’u, Sarah Jane Parton and Shannon Te Ao along with new performance art work by Kalisolaite ‘Uhila and the D.A.N.C.E. Art Club & The Taylors.
Curated by Anna-Marie White.
