HOUSIE! + Pig Parade + Fresh Produce Afterparty
27 May 2012
Next Wave Festival, Queen Victoria Markets, Melbourne, Australia
D.A.N.C.E. art club were invited to be part of Fresh Produce, the closing event of the 2012 Next Wave Festival and a celebratory survey of contemporary experimental practice incorporating live art, installation, dance, video, music and performance. The first event of its kind to be staged at the iconic Queen Victoria Markets, Fresh Produce was an all-out ‘art party’ driven by one of the Festival’s central provocations: what makes people gather? And what better way for people to gather than around food?
Using the framework of Housie, a style of Bingo popular in the Pacific, we created an interactive social game with tongue in cheek prizes that referenced pacific Island cliches, such as oversized lollie lei’s, large tins of corned beef and coconut cream. We opened the event with a pig on a spit and a ceremonial march through the space. The pig on a spit meat was then shared with the audience and attendees of Fresh Produce to eat.
